NEW RIVER, N.C. - According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, wearing a helmet reduces the risk of serious head and brain injuries by 85 percent.

Extreme Wheels Skate Park aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River offers patrons the opportunity to skate and bike — as long as they wear the required protective gear.

Marine Corps Order 5100.19f requires personnel who ride bicycles or skateboards aboard base, to wear a helmet and strongly recommend elbow pads, knee pads and wrist guards.

“We want to provide a safe, enjoyable environment,” said Bob Livingston, New River safety manager. “Even wearing all the proper protective gear doesn’t guarantee you won’t get injured, but it does mitigate the risk of injury.”

Patrons who do not wear proper safety equipment will be asked to leave and many face more serious consequences.

Violation of a written, lawful order may lead to a citation, administrative action or punitive action, said Livingston.

Marine Corps Base Lejeune-Marine Corps Installations-East Order 5560.2 also requires riders to wear reflective clothing during hours of darkness and skaters under the age of 18 to wear elbow pads and kneepads.

The skate park is not level ground, and includes obstacles. Some of the obstacles include intermediate jumps, a bowl, several quarter pipes and grinding rails.

“This is probably the nicest skateboard park in eastern North Carolina,” said Patrick Highers, Marine Corps Community Services Lejeune New River safety specialist. “It provides recreation to the Marines and families and allows Marines to decompress and stay in shape while having fun.”

The goal of the park is to provide recreational activities to Marines and families, while adhering to safety regulations.

“Safety is paramount at the skate park,” said Highers. “If you’re not wearing a helmet out here and you fall eight feet, (you could) do some damage to yourself or someone else.”
