JOINT BASE MYER-HENDERSON HALL, Va. - The Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall Family Advocacy Program will host the Blue Tie Affair May 7 to recognize and honor people who work with and enhance the lives of children on base, and the program’s staff are seeking nominations through April 27.
The Blue Tie Affair is an event unique to JBM-HH, founded in 2014 as a way to recognize Child Abuse Prevention and Awareness Month, but with a positive twist, according to Kelly Smith, the joint base’s Family Advocacy Program manager.
Prevention and awareness are certainly important, Smith said, but the goal of the Blue Tie Affair is to recognize those who are helping children.
“The mission is to enhance the well-being of children,” she said.
Five people will be recognized during this year’s event, and nominations are open to the entire joint base community, including service members, family members, Department of Defense civilians, retirees and community partners who work with and take care of children.
Nominees can be volunteer coaches, caretakers, volunteers at the Cody Child Development Center or people who organize events to support children’s well-being.
“I think all of us know somebody who does an awesome job taking care of children,” Smith said. “We really want people to think outside the box.”
