CHILLICOTHE, Ohio - Part of being in the military is the continually welcoming of new soldiers. The 1194th Engineer Company recently welcomed some new soldiers into its ranks as well. Staff Sgt. Jessie Smith, of Chillicothe, and Spc. Chris Sheets, of Jackson, joined the Chillicothe-based National Guard unit after recently completing a tour with the active duty Army.

Both soldiers joined the National Guard for one of the same reasons; they wanted to continue their military career, and they wanted additional training that the military would provide to help them in the civilian sector.

They both say that there are many differences between that they see between the National Guard and the active duty Army.

"The National Guard has a lot more relaxed atmosphere," said Smith. "Here, people are really supportive of your civilian life and understand personal issues."

"There is a lot more camaraderie in the National Guard than there is in the active duty areas," said Sheets. "This is a smaller unit than what I am used to. Everyone is more relaxed and very tight knit, but they all know what to do to get the job done."

Unit Commander Capt. Adam Sagraves said that the new soldiers will help the unit out immensely.

"These soldiers will be able to bring a different experience to the company. They will be able to add to our effectiveness and knowledge that we currently have. They will be a huge asset to us and allow us to be a better rounded company."
