PHOENIX – More than 30 community partners participated in The Arizona National Guard’s 15th Annual Earth Day event at Papago Park Military Reservation, here April 16.
The event, which is always free to the public, focused on providing education and resources to Arizona National Guard service members, civilian employees and the community about the importance of being environmentally conscious in honor of the official Earth Day which is April 22 this year.
“Our goal is simple,” said Dorenda Coleman, sustainment manager for the Arizona National Guard. “Our employees guard our state, our country, and our environment. By showcasing our efforts we inspire other organizations in the community to start their own initiatives.”
Over 400 children from neighboring elementary and middle schools explored the many Earth and environment friendly displays from organizations such as the Lyons Club, SRP, Liberty Wildlife, and Phoenix Herpetological Society.
“By providing a hands on opportunity to children at a young age we can instill habits that preserve our environment and wildlife,” said Crystie Baker, education director of the Phoenix Herpetological Society. “Helping them understand how decisions they make today can effect conservation efforts in the future is our top priority. With the help from our live animal displays we can leave a lasting impression for years to come.”
There are seven ways the Arizona National Guard regularly works to protect the environment. These include wildlife management, forest health and protection, pollution prevention, recycling, clean air and water conservation, site cleanup, cultural resource management and sustainability measures.
State wide efforts by the Soldiers and Airmen have kept 182 tons of garbage out of the landfill and saved the state $5,000 annually in trash fees that can be used for other projects.
