CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – In the military, convoy operations can be a daily part of life. Soldiers use these convoys to travel from their home station to a jobsite or training area and back.
To help teach basic convoy operations, the Soldiers of the 1194th Engineer Company traveled by military convoy from their home armory at Chillicothe to the Camp Ravenna Joint Maneuver Training Center in northeast Ohio.
The trip, at over 150 miles, gave Soldiers a chance to learn and reinforce the basics of convoy operation. From proper vehicle preparation, navigation, to what do in case of a breakdown, everything is stressed.
While the trip may seem like an easy task, being able to drive that distance with HMMWVs and five ton trucks, many fully loaded and with trailers, can be very challenging.
Sgt. 1st Class Robert Blackburn, the Senior Enlisted Soldier for the 1194th said that the trip boils down to one thing, training.
“By doing a significant trip like this, the Soldiers of the unit are able to increase their skill in operation of military vehicle,” said Blackburn. “This trip helps the younger Soldiers build practical experience in the importance of convoy operations as well as safety.”
Pfc. Adam Kenney from Cincinnati said this convoy trip was a good reinforcement of convoy techniques for him.
“This is only my second time doing a major convoy like this,” explained Kenney.
“While I do get chances to drive military vehicles, it was a good chance to reinforce what I have learned previously.”
The 1194th is currently conducting their two week annual military training at the Camp Ravenna Joint Maneuver Training Center in northeast Ohio. They will perform a variety of construction missions to help improve the training area at Camp Ravenna.
