SAN DIEGO – Sailors, attached to Amphibious Construction Battalion (ACB) 1, learn to prevent sexual assaults and other unacceptable behavior with bystander intervention training while in homeport, March 31.
April is National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month (SAAPM) and worldwide the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program is pushing to increase awareness and prevention of sexual assaults throughout the fleet.
“The biggest thing that people need to take away from this class is everyone is a leader as far as intervening,” Construction Electrician 3rd Class Juan Lopez, facilitator for the bystander intervention class. “People have to step up and step in, make sure they take the initiative to do that.”
Sailors watched a video about bystander intervention, took part in discussions, and went through various skits to practice different methods of intervening.
Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Kaitlyn Fahrenbach, SAPR victim advocate and instructor, said the training is meant for Sailors to recognize a situation that’s not right and step in to prevent sexual assaults from occurring.
Sailors were also briefed on unrestricted and restricted reporting when contacting a SAPR victim advocate and safety from retaliation if it came to making an official report.
“Go with your gut feeling and, if you feel like something is not right, overcome your fears because you could be preventing something from happening that could be worse,” said Utilitesmen 3rd Class Christina Burdge, an attendee of the bystander training.
