FORT STEWART, Ga. - With a click of the sabre, Command Sgt. Maj. Alan Hummel transferred responsibility of 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, to Command Sgt. Maj. Scott Cahill in a ceremony at Marne Gardens on Fort Stewart, Ga., April 8, 2015.
“We honor a tremendous warfighter for his contributions to 4th Brigade,” said Col. Thomas Gukeisen, commander of 4th IBCT, “and we welcome an equally impressive soldier into the annals of the rich Marne history.”
Hummel served as the senior enlisted adviser to the commander of 4th IBCT, or the Vanguard Brigade, for two years which began with a deployment to Afghanistan within days of him arriving at the unit.
“There is no doubt that your leadership and example empowered us to achieve our potential,” Gukeisen said to Hummel during the ceremony. “Your dedication to accomplishing missions with the highest standard remained constant.”
Gukeisen also called Hummel’s skills of mentorship invaluable to the brigade.
Hummel said he was proud of the accomplishments of the Vanguard Brigade under his leadership.
“To all the command teams and staff: Thank you for your endless support to the brigade and all of its ideas,” Hummel said from the podium. “To the soldiers of the Brigade: Thank you for your commitment and professionalism. If it weren’t for the soldiers, none of us would have a job.”
“This is a moment of sorrow of saying farewell to a great leader and a friend,” said Gukeisen. “It is also a moment steeped with joy of welcoming Command Sgt. Maj. Scott and Nicole Cahill.”
Cahill arrived to the Vanguard Brigade after serving as the senior enlisted advisor for 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, at Fort Lewis, Wash.
“My family and I are very happy to be back in Georgia and are looking forward to serving in 4th Brigade with you,” concluded Cahill.
