    216th Engineer Battalion

WOODLAWN, Ohio - The Woodlawn-based 216th Engineer Battalion, Ohio Army National Guard, recently welcomed its new company commander, Lt. Col. Ben Capriato.

Capriato takes over for Lt. Col. David Powell, who completed his command after a nearly three-year tour. Capriato is from Hilliard, Ohio, near Columbus. Capriato earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies (Cum Laude) from University of the State of New York, Albany New York, and a master's degree in educational leadership from the University of Dayton, Dayton, Ohio. He is married and has two children.

Capriato has been in the Ohio National Guard for more than 21 years and was originally an enlisted Soldier before he became a commissioned officer. His background in the military includes assignments in many capacities throughout the engineer fields. Capriato served as the G4, 16th Engineer Brigade, 4th Infantry Division (Multi-National Division–Baghdad) during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2005-2007.

“I am looking forward to commanding a battalion like this,” Capriato said. “This battalion has a history and a tradition of being a 'work horse' because the battalion accomplished the heavy lifting for the organizations that it supports. Whether we are completing projects, or building readiness, we will continue this tradition in all aspects of our mission."

Capriato said that his command philosophy can be summed up with the acronym “SAPPER.”
    • Success breeds success.
    • Assess everything that you do.
    • Plan.
    • People are our number one resource!
    • Execute everything you do to standard and have FUN!
    • Reward success and initiative.

“I am truly excited to be the battalion commander of the 216th Engineer Battalion, and I look forward to serving each and every one of you. I believe that we can truly be the finest military organization in the Ohio National Guard and the United States Army that is first to 'Fight and Build.'”
