FORWARD OPERATING BASE KALSU, Iraq – Local sheiks and village leaders in Khidr met with Iraqi army leaders in a council meeting, Jan. 30.
Two key issues discussed in the meeting were electricity and water problems in the area.
Leaders of 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division were present at the meeting; however the sheiks voiced their opinions amongst themselves and directed questions to the Iraqi army.
"It is so important for you all to be here together today," said Lt. Col. Timothy Newsome, commander of 3-7th Inf. Regt. "It speaks volumes to the fact that you are all eager to let go of what may have happened in the past and push on towards the future."
For many sheiks, the council meeting was the first sign of organized governance in their area of responsibility.
"What you are doing here today will make you and your families' futures better – a better tomorrow is what it's all about," Newsome said.
