JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. – Come Hell or high water, whether you are a Soldier on the battlefield fighting for your life against an enemy force or a crewman on deck of a vessel fighting against nature’s elements, one thing is for certain, both these adversities, can share a common solution to their comfort and that is taking refuge and faith in their leadership.

On March 23, Army Capt. Joshua Rodriguez, 8th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, sat down in Seattle with some of the captains and their crew from the hit television show “Deadliest Catch,” which premieres at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14 on the Discovery Channel, to talk about the commonalities between the leadership challenges each has to face.

“There were definitely some similar challenges that we both go through so we were just comparing the two on how the Army deals with it and how they do,” said Rodriguez.

During the filming of the “Deadliest Catch” pre-show called “The Bait,” the cast from Deadliest Catch and Rodriguez went back and forth on many issues, but one issue that seemed to be equally important to everyone was the men and women they were responsible for.

“We were just speaking about how there is no compromising safety standards,” said Rodriguez.

“We both have an opportunity where people can lose their lives if they don’t pay attention, said “Wild” Bill Wichrowski, captain of “The Cape Caution.” So you have to follow those appointed over you, which is kind of the military way.”

At one point during the filming, Rodriquez was asked about his combat experience and the once rambunctious crew fell silent to the words Rodriguez expressed while reliving a firefight that occurred overseas.

“It had to be such a heart-wrenching deal what he went through, but he had a glow about him and it was pride,” said Wichrowski.

“And that’s the thing, we almost had to drag the story out of him, because he’s very humble so that says a lot about a person,” said Sig Hansen, captain of “The Northwestern.” “That’s very cool; you don’t find that everyday.”

Throughout the day, both the crew and Rodriguez kept highlighting the fellowship that came from having jobs of such magnitude.

“This camaraderie, the brotherhood that you have in the military, and what we experience on the ocean it’s almost like this common bond,” said Hansen.

At the end of it all, both sides shared mutual respect and admiration towards one another as the captains and their crew now have a lifetime fan and Rodriquez has gained a lifetime of support.

“I’ll never compare myself to a military man, but that’s what inspired me today, talking to him,” said Wichrowski.

“It was a great experience! I think a lot of Soldiers like watching the show and I’ve gotten to see a couple episodes myself. I’ll definitely be a long time fan from here forward,” said Rodriguez. “The guys are very friendly and grateful for what all Soldiers and service members in general do for their country. It was nice to see them say the nice things they did, not just about me, but about everybody!”
