CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Family, friends and veterans of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 167 joined active duty members of the unit to celebrate its birthday with some unconventional fireworks on Camp Lejeune, N.C., April 1.

Marines with HMLA-167 celebrated its 47th birthday by giving a rare glimpse of the unit’s attack capabilities to retired members of the squadron and the family and friends of retired and active duty members. The Marines showed off the UH-1Y Super Huey and AH-1W Super Cobra helicopters conducting fire missions against targets with machine guns and missiles.

“We had an open house at the squadron this morning for former warriors as well as the families of the current members, so they could come out and look at our workspaces and interact with the Marines,” said Maj. David Fitzsimmons, the executive officer of the unit. “We also gave a firepower demonstration to show our aircraft in action. There are few people in the world who have been this close outside of the military.”

The squadron gathers on an annual basis for a birthday celebration, but occasionally the command includes a reunion, with the last reunion several years ago. The 2015 birthday reunion brought Marines together from across the history of the unit, from its origins in Vietnam to Iraq and Afghanistan to the garrison of Marine Corps Air Station New River 47 years later.

“It’s a good opportunity for the former members of the squadron to come out and spend some time with the current members and reconnect some old relationships as well as tell some good sea stories,” said Fitzsimmons, a native of Allentown, Pennsylvania. “It was fantastic to see these aircraft like this and it was a really good opportunity for the Marines of the squadron to talk to some of the alumni and connect across generations. They have the same stories, just told by different generations.”
