CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines with Weapons Company, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, took turns preparing platoon-level, attack-orders to teach them how to effectively write and brief a five paragraph order aboard Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, March 31, 2015.

The brief familiarized the Marines with how to take the contents of a company level order and write and brief their own order at the platoon level.

“We took a class on how to set up an order; then we received an order from our platoon commander,” said Cpl. Jonathan Gillis, a machine gunner with the unit and a native of McLean, Virginia. “He is acting in this exercise as the company commander, giving us a company order, and now we are writing a platoon order and delivering it to the rest of the class to practice tasking statements.”

It was the first time for a lot of Marines to come up with their own mission. They have to take in all of their assets and have main efforts and supporting efforts to establish a support by fire and use all possible assets to their advantage against an enemy that’s a squad size element.

“The Marines are doing a remarkable job,” said Sgt. Tyler Cerrato, a machine gunner with the unit. “From the first Marine that briefed to the last Marine that briefed, there has been an incredible amount of improvement and learning across the board. The Marines themselves have been critiquing what I want to say, and I can’t even give any suggestions anymore because the Marines are all over it.”

The training was also to give Marines a better understanding of what goes into being a leader.

“This gives the Marines a better understanding of what’s happening at higher levels such as the amount of planning that goes into your average patrol,” Cerrato said. “It also prepares them to be that subordinate commander, that squad leader, or that heavy guns platoon section leader. It prepares them for the next billet that they might have and to be able to confidently and intelligently speak about the plan that they are about to enact and to communicate that to their subordinates.”
