YOKOSUKA, Japan - Sailors aboard the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89) welcomed approximately 4,700 Japanese visitors for the 22nd annual Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka's (CFAY) Spring Festival, March 29.

Guests were treated to displays of damage control equipment and learned about the ship’s capabilities on a tour route including the flight deck, helicopter hangar, connected replenishment (CONREP) station and forecastle.

"It’s always a privilege spending time with our Japanese hosts," said Master Chief Edward B. Campbell, of Mustin. Many visitors recognized him from the 2013 Spring Festival when Mustin last offered tours. “They waited in line a long time to be with us, so we made sure every one of them enjoyed their visit to the Mustin nation."

The morning was mild and sunny as guests began to line the street leading from the entrance at Mikasa Park to the waterfront where Mustin is berthed. In the late afternoon, even as a steady rain began to fall, there was no dampening the spirits of the many visitors as everyone produced umbrellas and continued to queue for tours.

“CFAY’s Spring Festival is a great chance to demonstrate our commitment to Japan by displaying the capabilities of our warship and the professionalism of our crew,” said Cmdr. Thane C. Clare, Mustin’s executive officer. “I was impressed by the response from the community and happy that so many were able to come aboard to see the hard work our crew has put into maintaining Mustin while in port.”

Mustin, a component of Destroyer Squadron 15, is forward-deployed to Yokosuka to support the regional security and stability of the Indo-Asia-Pacific region.
