CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines from Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron gathered at Marine Corps Air Station New River Bowling Alley to compete in a bowling tournament Monday.

The fundraiser was the first of many that H&HS will be hosting to raise money for its Marine Corps ball.

“This is the first of about eight different sporting events where the Marines can pay money to participate in the event and that money in turn goes to the support of our Marine Corps ball fund,” said Lt. Col. Les Chiu, commanding officer of H&HS.

While raising funds for the ball, Marines received the opportunity to shake off the Monday morning blues while competing against various work sections from around the squadron.

“Each sporting event has points, and they culminate to the Commander’s Cup Trophy, and there is competition amongst Headquarters Squadron,” said Chiu. “We have sections that run the air field, to postal, the chow hall, … and amongst all those sections, we come together to not only meet and greet one another but have some fun in competition.”

The competition also gave Marines a way to share with one another about their weekend while getting energized for the work week ahead, said Sgt. Maj. Louis Leiva, sergeant major of H&HS.

“You can poke fun at somebody for shooting a gutter ball, but you can also cheer on somebody who’s shooting nothing but spares and strikes,” said Leiva.

The Commander’s Cup Competition is just one way H&HS brings its Marines together while raising money for squadron events.

“We always try to come out here and get involved in events like this,” said Lance Cpl. Dusty Hickman, an aircraft rescue and firefighting specialist with the squadron. “It’s a great way to come out and have a good time and not have to spend a lot of money. Everybody knows everybody, and everyone gets along. We have a great time during these events.”
