INDIANAPOLIS – Soldiers of the 939th Military Police Detachment, Indiana Army National Guard said goodbye to family and friends today at a farewell ceremony. The Guardsmen are set to deploy to Afghanistan to provide installation policing and customs support.

The detachment is led by Capt. Justin Roman and his senior enlisted adviser is Master Sgt. Jeffrey Vickous.

Indiana National Guard Adjutant General Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger addressed the unit and family members during the ceremony, conveying his best wishes and appreciation.

“Thank goodness we have young men and women like this, willing to raise their hands, leave their homes voluntarily and go to another country that needs help,” said Umbarger. “Who do we send? We send the best that we have, the few serving for the benefit of the many.”

After explaining his unit’s mission and training to the audience, Roman told the families they are the rock on which a Soldier is built.

“You as parents, spouses and families have forged and molded them into Indiana National Guard’s finest military police force. You are an integral part of the team which sustains the Soldiers and keeps them longing to be with you at the end of this road,” said Roman.

After the ceremony, Staff Sgt. David Beers, who has previously deployed with the 939th, spent the last few hours visiting with family and friends before preparing to leave for Fort Bliss, Texas.

“I’m real impressed with the unit. Everyone has come together, everyone’s meshed,” said Beers. “I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a unit come this far so quickly.”

Military Police Investigator Spc. Christopher Silva, a recent graduate of Ball State with a degree in criminal justice, said the unit’s readiness is top notch.

“Master Sgt. Vickous and Capt. Roman have done a fantastic job of getting us ready to go, and I’m really excited to go with them,” said Silva.

Approximately 30 Military Police Soldiers will head to Fort Bliss, Texas, to receive additional training before deploying to Afghanistan.
