HUNTER ARMY AIRFIELD, Ga. – The Vipers of 1st Battalion, 3rd Aviation Regiment, 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade took home the championship trophy after a close contest defeating Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd CAB 43-39 during the 2nd Annual Marne Air March Madness basketball tournament at Hunter Army Airfield, March 19.
This marks the second year in a row the Vipers have brought home the trophy.
“That was a very good game. But in the end there is only one winner, strike to kill wins it yet again,” Col. John D. Kline, 3rd CAB commander said.
The game started off with the Talons of HHC, 3rd CAB grabbing a lead of nine points which they held until the half.
First Lt. Trahern Holden, HHC, 1st Bn., 3rd Aviation Regt., said his team was never worried.
“We know we’ve got a good team and we fought hard the entire tournament,” Trahern said.
Earlier that day the Talons had to defeat a team from 603rd Aviation Support Battalion to gain entry into the championship game. That meant this was their second game on the same day. They did not use it as an excuse.
Sgt. Charles Clark, HHC, 3rd CAB was competing for his first time in the event after recently joining the unit. Clark never once talked about the team being too tired. After leading by nine the team tried to stall, and the strategy did not work.
“We should have kept pressing them. We had them down, and we had the momentum. We tried to stall which turns out really isn't our strong point,” Clark said.
Though his team did not bring home the trophy, Clark said he enjoyed the competition.
“The best part of the tournament for me was the camaraderie and getting to meet people from other units,” Clark said.
