    311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command

LOS ANGELES – Command Sgt. Maj. Grady Blue Jr., a Linden, North Carolina native, assumed the command sergeant major position of the 311th Expeditionary Sustainment Command March 22, in a change of responsibility ceremony at the West Los Angeles U.S. Army Reserve Center.

Brig. Gen. David Elwell, 311th ESC commanding general, was present to welcome the new command sergeant major and unit headquarters and headquarters company first sergeant aboard.

Command Sgt. Maj. Blue has received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Shaw University and a Graduate Degree in Counseling from Webster University. He is a licensed certified addiction specialist and certified clinical supervisor with the North Carolina Substance Abuse Professional Practice Board. He has two combat tours to Grenada and Desert Shield/Desert Storm.

There were overcast skies, but the weather was perfect at the West Los Angeles Reserve Center and the Soldiers and guests in attendance enjoyed a pleasant event.

As the mistress of ceremonies, Master Sgt. (P) Judith Denamuno, 311th ESC support operations noncommissioned officer in-charge, welcomed the brigade units representatives and families to the ceremony saying, “The transfer of colors is significant in many ways. They are the building blocks for the future of achievement.”

The ceremony began with the traditional ceremonial pageantry. The standing units were summoned to order arms. The audience stood for the presentation of the colors and honors, and the units were brought to present arms, then to parade rest. These displays of uniformity were executed with discipline and precision.

Brig. Gen. Elwell was enthusiastic as he welcomed the new command sergeant major. This was the beginning of a new command and he said, “I interviewed a lot of candidates and I realized that command sergeant major Blue and I share the same priorities.” He looked at the new command sergeant major and said, “I am happy to have you as my battle buddy.”

Command Sgt. Maj. Blue was energized and ready to assume his new assignment. In the past, he has served as the command sergeant major at the brigade and division level, and also served at the 80th Command Drill Sergeant School as the Commandant.

“As we move from an Army of war to an Army of preparation it is my opinion that we have the potential to be the best sustainment command in the 79th Sustainment Support Command,” said Blue. “ I am fired up and excited about being back in the Operation Army. Together we will show the 79th Sustainment Support Command what ‘Right’ looks like!”
At the end of the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Elwell also welcomed the new HHC first sergeant. First Sgt. Kelly Javier is also ready to get to work saying, “I want to make sure we are ready to go down range. I want to tell our Soldiers that I’m here for you.”

The 311th ESC is a United States Army logistics headquarters. The sustainment command's primary mission is to command the sustainment brigades that provide combat support and combat service support in the areas of supply, maintenance, transportation and field services. The command is designed to deploy into a theater of operations, assume command of the logistical units in place and provide oversight and material management.
