    Commander, Submarine Group Ten

KINGS BAY, Ga. - The Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Tennessee (SSBN 734) (Blue) held a change of command at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, March 20.

Cmdr. Charles McLenithan III relieved Cmdr. John Howrey as commanding officer of USS Tennessee (SSBN 734) (Blue). Howrey attributed his successful tour on board Tennessee to the crew and their families.

“It was truly my honor to serve with the finest Sailors, chiefs, officers and families in the Submarine force,” said Howrey. “During our time on board Tennessee, we built something special. We took a boat fresh out of the shipyard and made it a premier front-line strategic asset.”

Howrey said that his crew on board Tennessee was the best group of Sailors he has worked with in his career.

“We cultivated deck-plate leaders to take Tennessee’s strategic excellence and outstanding crew morale into the future,” said Howrey. “I challenge you to continue this legacy of excellence we have developed and carry it forward, wherever you may go. I am proud of each and every one of you and the great things that you have accomplished during our time together on Tennessee.”

McLenithan, a Sanger, California, native, previously served as the executive officer on USS Louisiana (SSBN 743) (Gold). His last assignment was at Commander, Submarine Force Pacific U.S. Fleet staff.

"My family and I are extremely proud to be part of the Tennessee family and look forward to the rewarding years ahead," said McLenithan. “I am humbled by the privilege to be in command of such an outstanding crew carrying out the nation's most vital mission of strategic deterrence.”

Capt. Rich Correll, director, Joint and Maintenance Operations, U.S. Fleet Forces Command, served as the guest speaker for the event.

“The list of achievements of John and his crew are absolutely breathtaking,” said Correll. “I would sum up the performance of this incredible team under Cmdr. Howrey’s leadership as sustained, exceptional, operational performance achieving success for each and every imaginable challenge again and again because of the resourcefulness and tenacity of its people. Cmdr. Howrey achieved success because he gets out of the way and lets the officers, the chief petty officers and his crew, do their job.”

USS Tennessee is the fourth U.S. Navy ship and first submarine to be named for the 16th state. USS Tennessee was commissioned on Dec. 17, 1988.
