MARINES CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. – Aviation is a male-dominated career field in both the commercial sector and the military. Female Marine aviators recently took advantage of an opportunity to show young women and men that military aviation is a viable option.
Marine aviators attended the 26th annual Women in Aviation International Symposium March 5th through the 7th in Dallas, Texas. The event gives young men and women a chance to explore paths in the aviation career field.
“Our group is very interactive, and they want to help the young people,” said Dr. Peggy Chabrian, president of WAI. “They want to give them suggestions and help them achieve their aviation career goals.”
The Marines set up a booth in the exhibit where the attendees performed pull-ups or flexed-arm hangs for incentive items and also spoke with Marine aviators about career options and their personal experiences.
“This organization has been very fulfilling for me not only as a mentor, but to be able to pass that on to the next generation of women who are coming behind me,” said Lt. Col. Jenifer Nothelfer, recruiting support officer from Recruiting Station Des Moines.
Nothelfer is a Warrenton, Va. native who graduated from Marymount University in 1993. While working for Atlantic Coast Airlines as a flight attendant, she discovered a love for flying and began her pursuit for a military aviation career on a dare. She began flight training with the Navy, but eventually discovered her real dream was to become a Marine. In 1997, that dream came true. Nothelfer has spent her 19-year career flying CH-46E Sea Knight helicopters for the Marine Corps.
Nothelfer said she takes every chance she gets to expose young women to military aviation career options. She has been attending WAI for 15 years, and was a keynote speaker at this year's conference.
“Women in Aviation for me is about the camaraderie and the connections of the women of this organization and what it stands for,” Nothelfer said. “You don’t have to be just an aviator to come to this conference and take benefits away from it.”
Nothelfer said she takes this conference as an opportunity to let young women know that there are unlimited possibilities for them in the aviation field. She also hopes the young women see that the Marine Corps is a viable option for them.
