ATLANTA - Hundreds of homeless Veterans took advantage of an Atlanta VA Medical Center program designed to bring them closer to the kinds of services they may need, especially during winter weather.

The mid-winter Stand Down was held at the medical center’s Fort McPherson Campus on Feb 28 and provided homeless veterans with warm meals and cold-weather clothing as well as medical evaluations and housing and employment assistance. One Army veteran who served three tours in Iraq said the Stand Down helped him and other homeless veterans navigate through a VA system that many times is confusing and frustrating.

"It's been very cold in the Atlanta area and many homeless veterans do not know where they can go for help," the veteran said. "Even if it's just a jacket or blanket to keep us warm, it helps a great deal" April Edwards, clinical director for Atlanta VA’s Homeless Veterans Program, said one of the goals of conducting a Stand Down is to help homeless veterans find out what is available to them. “We really try our best to outreach to them and say, you served, let us serve you back," Edwards added. - See more at:
