    JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. - Learning how to reduce injuries and increase performance is the goal for two Soldier strength training athletes who are developing a lifting and performance clinic.

    One of the goals for Capt. Shane McDonald, a physical therapy specialist with Madigan Army Medical Center, is to help Soldiers develop good body awareness.
    “We want to teach your brains and muscles to work together, which is also what we try to accomplish in physical therapy,” McDonald said.

    The initial clinics would be aimed at squad leaders, and would teach them to perform basic readiness assessments for their Soldiers as they progress through strength training.

    Along with McDonald, Capt. Marcel Wright, a rear detachment commander for Headquarters Support Company, 5th Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery, wants to ensure that Soldiers do not try to progress too fast and can recognize when their bodies are ready.

    “When I was power lifting, I noticed I was having a lot of injuries,” Wright said. “Proper technique is vital, and what we do is teach things as fundamental as proper squatting, knee position, body alignment and maximizing energy.”

    McDonald stresses that it takes months, even years, to properly train for competitive lifting events, and that Soldiers should not attempt participation based solely on training acquired over a nine-month deployment.

    Through his work with Madigan physical therapy, he’s noted that the most injuries he treats deal with knees, ankles, back and shoulders.

    “It’s important to know how to work your way out of a bad lift, but what we’re also trying to show Soldiers is how to dismount from the back of a truck properly - how to land if you jump down in a way to decrease the effects on your knees and ankles,” McDonald said.
