CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A new organization is setting up shop on base to ensure all Marines get the effective deployment training they need.

The Division Combat Skills Center aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune was developed to advance and build on the individual and team skill sets for junior Marines, noncommissioned officers and corpsman attached to units.

It offers combat skills courses, such as machine gun operations, and field medical refresher courses.

Class sizes can range from 10 to 20 students, and can be tailored to suit just a handful, said Staff Sgt. Shaun Doyle, training chief for the DCSC.

“We want the Marines to get the good training they need,” said Doyle. “Our focus is on the 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000 level tasks while the units manage the higher-level tasks.”

Courses at the DCSC are available to all Marines aboard the base, added Doyle.

Removing the Marines from the administrative portion of deployment build up, the DCSC focuses on enhancing combat readiness and specific skills such as machine gun courses or urban warfare, said Master Gunnery Sgt. Sonny Rodgers, operations chief for the DCSC.

“Our focus is on the squad and section leaders,” said Rodgers. “We want to improve the proficiency with all the weapons the Marines utilize. They won’t just come here to sit; they will learn additional and advanced skills and can even get professional military education complete to further their military occupational specialty progression.”

The DCSC will hold its first course Monday to cover distinguished marksmanship and is also organizing the division super squad competition.

Volunteers are needed to serve as instructors.

“The DCSC is looking for quality Marines who meet the commanding general’s intentions and look to work regular hours so they can focus on their families as well,” said Rodgers.
