This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War and North Carolina and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune are teaming up to commemorate the men and women who served
during that time.
Chapter 885 of the Vietnam Veterans Association, located in Wilmington, is hosting a four-day event, honoring Vietnam
veterans. The ceremony will start April 23 with a special remembrance ceremony and will finish April 26 with a breakfast aboard the USS North Carolina Battleship Memorial.
Registration is required to attend the event, and there are only 550 occupant spots available to those interested in participating.
“Our local area alone has more than 18,000 veterans so we have high hopes for a great turnout,” said John Reed, Vietnam
veteran and one of the organizers of the commemoration.
When the draft was implemented in 1965, more than 45,000 young men and women were called up to serve their country.
Many were killed in action or captured as prisoners of war.
More than 1,300 Americans were listed as prisoners of wars or missing in action and more than 58,000 were killed in action.
These names are permanently etched into the memorials in Washington, D.C. and Jacksonville.
“Any remembrance we can have for those who have sacrificed and those who continue to serve is important,” said Reed.
