IWAKUNI, Japan - Marines, sailors and civilians with the Navy Supply Corps aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, celebrated their 220th birthday in building 100, March 13, 2015.
The Navy’s Supply Corps birthday is Feb. 23, 1795, but they celebrated it March 13 with a formal cake cutting ceremony where the youngest and oldest sailor and the officer in charge cut the cake conjointly.
The Supply Corps aboard station supports a total of 15 different divisions including: Food service, harbor operations, fuels and motor transportation.
“The impact that we as a community had on the success and sustainability of missions over many years cannot be put into words,” said Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Bernardo Almanzar, a supply clerk with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron. “I believe that coming together to celebrate our community’s history is very important in building a sense of pride in the job that we do.”
The supply corps has a broad range of responsibilities, they are in charge of ordering food for the Mess Hall, financial management, contracting and much more.
“Sometimes the monotony of daily tasks can cause people to be short-sighted in regards to the bigger picture,” said Almanzar. “Logistics is of vital importance to the mission and this type of event helps remind people just how crucial their role within the military actually is.”
On a naval base or ship where the Supply Corps would have a much larger community, they would usually celebrate by having a ball.
Lt. Cmdr. Romeo B. Romeo, logistics officer with H&HS, said the supply corps is not the only community that celebrates their birthday; it is very common within the Navy.
“In a big command, like (Yokosuka Naval Base), we have a Navy Supply Corps Birthday Ball, similar to the Marine Corps Birthday Ball, where there would be formal ball room dancing, guest speakers and a much bigger cake,” said Romeo.
The Supply Corps provides the Navy with items essential to the operation of ships, aircraft, facilities and services to military personnel and their families, and has done this for 220 years.
“There is a long and rich history behind what we do. It would be a shame if we didn’t take some time to reflect on that,” said Almanzar.
