SHEPPARD AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- What started as Women's History Week in 1982 later transformed into a monthlong appreciation for women's history in 1987. Since then Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have continued to uphold this tradition, signing annual proclamations for the month of March.

The Library of Congress, National Archives and many other U.S. organizations pay tribute in March to the generations of women who have proven to be invaluable in today's society, according to womenshistorymonth.gov.

This year, weaving the stories of women's lives became the theme for Women's History Month at Sheppard.

"Women's History Month has allowed me the chance to think about those who helped me get to the position I'm in today," said U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Ava Margerison, 82nd Training Wing Women's History Month committee member. "It's easy for us to take for granted all of the men and women who made it possible for us to serve. These events help me to become more grounded and be grateful for those who spoke up for potential past, present, and future leaders."

This month kicked off with the "women in history" 5k fun run and team relay. The events highlighted an array of women who had an impact on history.

"I ran it because I am proud of the woman I have been able to become and because of the women who have paved the way before me," said U.S. Air Force Capt. Megan Bodine, 82nd Training Wing fun run participant. "I am proud that I can continue to lead making history for my son and daughter."

A series of events will take place this month to pay tribute to the many women who have shaped our world into what it is today. Sheppard has hosted many events over the past 34 years for Women's History Month. This will be the 35th year that Sheppard hosts these kinds of events.

"As military members, Women's History Month reiterates that we all bring something different to the fight," said Margerison. "How we grow and learn from those around us is inevitably going to make us all stronger as a whole."

Other events that are scheduled to take place this month include; Women in the Military Lunch N' Learn (March 11), Women's Conference "Fully Charged/connected," (March 24), and Through the Years Heritage Open House (March 30). For information about these events, contact 1st Lt. Nercresainne White at Comm: 940-676-1961.
