Task Force 51/5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade

AL ASAD AIR BASE, Iraq - Three U.S. Navy Corpsman assigned to Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Crisis Response – Central Command, earned Fleet Marine Force pins aboard Al Asad Air Base, Iraq, Feb. 17, 2015.

Seamen Zaccary Griffin, Aaron Foster and Steven Madson received FMF pins after completing the requirements.
The course included lessons about the Marine Corps, ranging from administration to infantry tactics, to help the sailors better understand their partner service. The pin is awarded to sailors who show an ability and willingness to learn the next level of warfighting to more effectively support the mission of the Marine Corps.

From the day they arrived at their unit, the sailors worked hard to earn their FMF pin because it not only allows them to become more tactically proficient at their job, it also gives them deeper insight into their unit.
Griffin said, the course was a lot of hard work and everybody has pushed for their FMF pin since day-one.

“It’s a warfare pin we can earn through different units,” Foster said. “We go over 21 different sections of information. We have to know a lot of it verbatim when we test out at the end.”

The sailors showed they wanted the FMF pin and were prepared to do what it took to get it.

“For a corpsman it’s one of the biggest things, getting this pin,” said Griffin. “We’re now held at a higher level so it’s a big step in our careers.”

U.S. Marine Capt. Philip Flambert, a company commander with SPMAGTF-CR-CC, said, “[The Corpsmen engaged] in unknown challenges and they came out on top and exceeded expectations everyday as part of Task Force Al Asad.”

The sailors don’t plan to stop here. Longer, more challenging courses are just over the horizon for them.

Foster said the corpsmen hope to learn more from the Corpsman Manual so they can earn their next promotion, in addition to enrolling in college courses. Earning the FMF pins help them get closer to obtaining those goals.

“[Being here] to pin them is a unique opportunity,” Flambert said. “It takes a special kind of guy to not only be a corpsman but also support the infantry and everything they do.”

The corpsmen are excited to be a part of a community of fellow sailors who have earned the right to wear the Fleet Marine Force pin on their chest.
