F.E. WARREN AIR FORCE BASE, Wyo. - The U.S. Army is responsible for providing veterinary treatment to all Department of Defense animals and service members’ pets. The Mighty Ninety Airmen can bring their four-legged friends to receive care at the U.S. Army Veterinary Treatment Facility.
“We provide the necessary procedures to ensure your pets remain healthy,” said Jolene McCauley, VTF operations assistant. “We offer routine check-ups, conduct blood work, administer vaccinations and perform necessary medical examinations for your pets.”
McCauley said having a veterinarian on base benefits the community by lowering costs of examinations and vaccinations. A routine medical examination runs $35, and registration for pets is free for any military or retired military personnel.
“Our biggest concern is not knowing if pets have the proper vaccinations, and we are unable to find out unless they are registered with us,” McCauley said. “Pets may be at risk for diseases or may risk transferring diseases to other pets if not properly vaccinated.”
If animals are not protected, they can be at risk for a number of issues that not only affect them, but the owners as well.
“Our number one goal is ensuring the wellness of your pets, both for the animals as well as pubic health of the base,” said Army Capt. Shannon McLean, VTF officer-in-charge and veterinarian.
The VTF has restricted capabilities due to limited equipment and manning. The facility is unable to provide any radiographic or emergency services.
“Recently we have had to stop providing certain services due to a loss in funding,” McLean said. “We are hoping the ban is lifted soon so we will be able to provide minor surgical needs, including spays and neuters, mass removals, wound care and routine dental procedures.”
