PIRMASENS, Germany - A Naval Medical Logistics Command Sailor was recognized by Fort Detrick’s commanding general in a ceremony held in Pirmasens, Germany, Jan. 26 for his excellent customer service.
Maj. Gen. Brian C. Lein, commanding general of U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command and Fort Detrick and deputy for Medical Systems to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics, and Technology presented the coveted commander's coin to Hospital Corpsmen 2nd Class Austin Leavitt of Naval Medical Logistics Command Detachment, Pirmasens, Germany during its all-hands meeting.
Leavitt was recognized for his exceptional efforts in support of the Customer Support Division of the United States Army Medical Materiel Center-Europe (USAMMCE) and its many customers.
“HM2 Leavitt is always looking for ways to make material and customer orders more efficient by double checking and notifying customers about their orders. He helped reduce customer ‘due-in’ metrics significantly, creating a monthly reconciliation requirement for Naval Hospital Rota, Naval Hospital Sigonella and Naval Hospital Naples,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Stephen Armstrong, the detachment’s Leading Chief Petty Officer. “HM2 Leavitt supports all Navy shore based clinics and hospitals in the EUCOM/CENTCOM/AFRICOM Area of Responsibility (AOR). He assists the material management teams at each location so they are advised on shipping dates and changes in material availability.”
The responsibility of handling forward deployed support and logistics needs require a great deal of tenacity; something that Leavitt displayed routinely. When asked about his work ethic, Leavitt’s leadership described him in traditional Navy verbiage.
“HM2 Leavitt consistently displays a ‘can-do’ attitude. He is the ultimate team player. His efforts ensure USAMMCE customers in harm’s way always have the very best medical supplies and equipment available,” said Lt. Cmdr. John Stage, Officer-in-Charge, Naval Medical Logistics Command Detachment, Pirmasens Germany. “Specifically, HM2 Leavitt provides Class VIII support to 30 afloat and ashore Navy and Marine Corps customers. In just three months, he reviewed 259 due-ins for three customers, significantly reducing aged due-in average and ensured compliance with DoD and Navy metrics. He processed 150 customer line items in a hold status ensuring all material end equipment was processed through the Theater Enterprise-Wide Logistics System and delivered to the customer expeditiously. And he processed two high priority orders, and provided shipping and status update regularly, ensuring the Expeditionary Medical Facility Djibouti was able to effectively treat two patients with urgent medical conditions without delay.”
Reflecting on the recognition he received for the outstanding role he plays in supporting Warfighters throughout the AOR, Leavitt commented on meeting his boss and then humbly shared the credit with his team.
“It was a great opportunity to meet and shake hands with Maj. Gen. Lein and to be recognized in this manner,” Leavitt said. “My reaction was mostly intrinsic but it was a reaction of gratitude to my leadership. It is always a pleasure to have outstanding leadership that seeks out ways to recognize the efforts and hard work that is put in daily.”
Naval Medical Logistics Command Detachment, Pirmasens, Germany supports USAMMCE which, as the Theater Lead Agent for Medical Materiel, provides Life Cycle Management of Class VIII (medical) material; clinical and bio-medical engineering of medical equipment; clinical advisory and consultation; optical fabrication; assemblage of sets, kits and outfits; reconstitution of major and minor medical assemblages, and supply chain training of logisticians in theater of operations.
The NMLC Detachment Team leads USAMMCE's Customer Support Division (CSD) and specializes in providing its customers with medical logistics support and training across the full spectrum of military operations to EUCOM, CENTCOM, AFRICOM and SOCEUR to include all areas in 5th and 6th Fleets.
Headed by Capt. Mary S. Seymour and based on Fort Detrick, Maryland, Naval Medical Logistics Command delivers patient-centered logistics solutions for military medicine. It is the Department of Defense’s premier medical logistics support activity.
