GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba - Soldiers Undertaking Disabled Scuba made its ninth appearance at U.S. Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, this week, giving seven former service members the opportunity to spend five days diving in the surrounding tropical waters.

One of the seven divers, Paul McQuigg, a former Marine of over 16 years, is participating in the SUDS program for the first time.

“I found out about SUDS through a diving site I visit. They sent me a newsletter and read up and found out more about it. I sent John an email that I was interested as a wounded vet, and he sent me an email back to set something up.”

The unique nature of SUDS makes the environment and the experience as a whole something that veterans will enjoy despite their disabilities.

“This is my first trip with SUDS. It’s really nice to be around other veterans who have been through some of the same type of stuff you have been through, to be able to relate to them,” McQuigg said. “When you are out there you don’t let the disability hold you back. You get out there and do what you came to do.”

The intention behind the SUDS program is to serve as a form of therapy for veterans, to get them away from the hustle and bustle of the busy lives they lead and just give them a chance to relax.

“I really look forward to it. It gives you something to look forward to. It puts a little pep in your step, especially coming here to GTMO where not every one can come and dive,” McQuigg said.

“I’ve had a fantastic time. It’s a great group of people that I’ve come here with and that I’ve met here on the Island,” McQuigg said. “The hospitality here on the Island has been fantastic.”
