ARTA, Djibouti - U.S. Marines assigned to the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit established a service support area in order to conduct sustainment training in Arta, Djibouti, Feb. 15, 2015.

Elements of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force worked together to stage berthing areas, equipment, vehicles, ammo and an area for hygiene as part of the 24th MEU training mission.

“It’s really a group effort to try and set up this service support area,” said 1stLt Luke Dorrough, logistics combat element assistant operations officer, 24th MEU. “Establishing this area allows us to stage equipment and supplies ashore, allowing the 24th MEU to conduct training in the outlying areas.”

The 24th MEU’s main challenges here will be the austere environment. The temperature is something that these Marines have not been acclimated to while embarked on the ships of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group. In addition, due to the location of the service support area having a rocky terrain, it will be difficult to navigate through the staged areas.

According to Dorrough, the most important part of establishing the service support area will be the layout. Being on the ship, it is difficult trying to establish where everything will be placed when the MEU arrives ashore from only being able to see imagery of the location.

Once the service support area is fully established, the Marines will be sent to different training areas to conduct various live-fire training scenarios.

Dorrough stated, “It will be an interesting experience providing the life sustainment and support for these Marines who are required to conduct their training here later this week.”

The 24th MEU is currently embarked on the ships of the Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group and deployed to maintain regional security in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
