IWAKUNI, Japan - Seniors Len Jon Cadavos and Jarrell P. Davis, both captains of the Matthew C. Perry High School’s basketball team, fight during the finals of their last Far East Basketball Tournament, Feb. 16-18, 2015, aboard Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan.
The captains led their team into a good position with their win against Osan American High School’s basketball team in game 13 of this tournament.
Since the tournament was double elimination, winning game 13 meant they could lose in game 16 against Yakota High School and still have a chance to take the championship title.
Being the only two seniors, having more experience and being players for the rest of the team to look up to, coaches assigned Cadavos and Jarrell to be the team captains.
“Most of our teammates are first-year players,” said Davis. “So Jon and I, as team captains, tried our best to amp them up and work as a team to win every game we played.”
Cadavos said the team gave their all in the tournament; the only thing they could’ve done better was come first.
This is the second consecutive year that M.C. Perry has made it to the finals.
According to both Cadavos and Davis, all the coaches are well respected by everyone on the team.
“Coach Ronnie Pride is like the mastermind, he really knows what he’s doing,” said Cadavos. “Coach Keith Carr is like our mentor, he’s the one that calms us down when we get frustrated and reminds us we need to have fun.”
Coach Dewayne Pigge is the main coach and according to Cadavos, the players can tell he really cares about them because “he treats us like we’re his sons.”
Cadavos and Davis came to an agreement when they said, “Coach P.J. is exactly like ‘Coach Carter’.”
Coach Ken Carter is a high school basketball coach that is well known for his “no nonsense” approach with his players; in 1999 he benched his undefeated team for having bad grades.
Cadavos played on M.C. Perry’s basketball team since he was a freshman, but throughout his high school career he also played soccer, tennis and football.
Davis played on the basketball team since his sophomore year while also playing football, baseball and soccer during his time at M.C. Perry.
Davis said he plans on going to Clark Atlanta University to continue his career in basketball and Cadavos was looked at by Sterling College and Pratt Institute but he said he just wants to get into a good college, “playing basketball for them would just be a benefit.”
