CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The commanding officers and senior enlisted advisors of II Marine Expeditionary Force gathered for the kick-off of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society active duty fund drive aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, Feb. 18, 2015. During the kick-off, the attendees discussed the importance of NMCRS, their personal experiences with the society and their plan for spreading awareness.

The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society was established in 1904 and has since provided financial and education assistance, as well as other programs and services to Marines and sailors, their eligible family members, widows and survivors. Their goal is to provide assistance to everyone who comes to them for support for their immediate needs.

“NMCRS helps in emergency situations and when unexpected financial needs occur by providing interest free loans and grants,” said Maj. General William D. Beydler, the commanding general for II MEF. “By financially assisting, NMCRS keeps our Marines and Sailors in the fight.”

The fund drive not only gave the attendees the opportunity to donate, it also provided additional knowledge on the importance of the program as well as personal stories from those in attendance. Sergeant Maj. Bryan Zickefoose, the sergeant major of II MEF, shared his experience with the NMCRS during the kick-off. Zickefoose explained how the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society assisted him when tragedy struck his family.

“When I was a young corporal I had a stillborn baby. [The Marine Corps Relief Society] basically paid for my daughter to be buried, funeral arrangements and transportation to my home in Nebraska,” Zickefoose said.

Zickefoose explained the financial strain this would’ve added to his family in an already trying time.

“It would’ve cost me everything I had at that time,” said Zickefoose. “If I didn’t have the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society to take care of me, I would have been in a bad situation.”

Zickefoose’s story is one of many of the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society coming to the aid of Marines and sailors in need.
Beydler explains that donating to the NMCRS ties back to our roots as Marines.

“All leaders within II MEF, NCO to officer, are charged with taking care of their own. Donating to NMCRS is fulfilling that ethos,” Beydler said. “Their contribution is directly helping one in five Marines and sailors who will require assistance in 2015.”

Marines and sailors interested in donating can go online to nmcrs.org or contact their unit’s representative for information and donation.
