GALVESTON, Texas (Feb. 19, 2015) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District awarded a contract in the amount of $4,106,760 to Southern Contracting LLC, a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business, to perform containment dike raising on Alexander Island Placement Area, located along the Houston Ship Channel.

The contractor will be required to construct dredged material placement area containment dikes, with work expected to begin in March 2015.

“This containment dike raising contract will provide dredged material placement area capacity for upcoming maintenance dredging contracts along the Houston Ship Channel,”said Tricia Campbell, USACE Galveston District operations manager. “Adequate placement area capacity is necessary in order to maintain navigation along the Houston Ship Channel.”

According to Campbell, the raising of the existing containment dikes at Alexander Island Placement Area will provide capacity for the next Houston Ship Channel ‘Morgan’s Point to Exxon reach’ dredging job scheduled in 2016.

The project is expected to be completed approximately one year after commencement.

The USACE Galveston District was established in 1880 as the first engineer district in Texas to oversee river and harbor improvements. The district is directly responsible for maintaining more than 1,000 miles of channel, including 270 miles of deep draft and 750 miles of shallow draft as well as the Colorado River Locks and Brazos River Floodgates.
