MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Marines, Sailors and civilians gathered for an award ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C., Feb. 10, celebrating the efforts of more than 60 volunteers who assisted the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society during 2014.
“One of the best things I get to do is recognize Marines, Sailors and their families for excellence,” said Col. Chris Pappas III, the air station commander. “The Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society is a very special organization because it is for us, by us. As service members and families, we are the ones who provide the resources for each other.”
The NMCRS relies on the efforts of dedicated volunteers to continue providing Marines and Sailors support. The NMCRS is a nonprofit agency that provides financial and educational assistance to active duty and retired service members and families.
“Volunteers make this organization possible,” said Pappas. “It could not happen without the thousands of hours that go into supporting Marines, Sailors and families.”
According to Philly Pridgen, a volunteer with the society, during the ceremony the NMCRS staff and air station leaders recognized volunteers for milestones reached in volunteer efforts, ranging from eight to more than seven thousand volunteer hours.
“We are a volunteer organization, with only three paid employees on staff; our 64 volunteers are truly the heart of the society,” said Pridgen. “Without them, the society would not exist.”
According to Pridgen, the Cherry Point NMCRS provided more than $775,000 in financial assistance to the more than 1,600 Marines, Sailors and Navy-Marine Corps families during 2014. Additionally, the society hosted 31 different workshops and provided 242 baby gift-bags to new and expecting parents.
“Volunteers don’t receive monetary compensation,” said Pridgen. “They don’t do it for recognition. They do it because their hearts radiate passion, compassion and dedication. They do it to give back to the community that is their own.”
