    Story by Thomas Perry

    Defense Contract Management Agency

DALLAS - Ronald Regalado loves his job. To a layman, his daily mission of facilitating the reutilization, transfer, donation and proper disposition of excess and surplus property may sound about as interesting as watching a 1,000 page contract print, but according to his supervisor, his role as a plant clearance officer in Dallas is vital to organizational success.

“Ron’s passion and excitement for property disposal and reutilization is one of the many things that make him a model employee and a leader,” said Barbara Van Egeren, DCMA Contracts Directorate Business Operations Center Plant Clearance Group acting director. “Through his efforts in fiscal 2014 in obtaining appropriate disposal of Army (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) vehicles, he achieved more reuse of government property by himself than the entire plant clearance group combined.”

In fact, he loves his job so much he wants to share his property management knowledge with others through industry publications and personal instruction.

“Over the past ten plus years, I have contributed to the body of knowledge available through the National Property Management Association by writing articles for the Journal of Property and Asset Management, the Property Professional magazine and by providing leadership as a workshop facilitator,” said Regalado, who obtained his Certified Professional Property Manager certification through NPMA. “Writing articles has allowed me to give back to the profession so others can leverage my knowledge and experience. A personal goal for me has always been to contribute to the body of knowledge for the property profession.”

Regalado, who receives approval from the agency’s General Counsel and Public Affairs Office before releasing his articles, said he has always been interested in writing, but only composes an article when he is inspired to “tell the story of something technical that I have first-hand experience with.” He wrote and submitted five articles in 2014. In December, the Property Professional published his “Planning is Everything, CAIMAN MRAP Contract Termination and Divestiture” article. His other submissions are on tap for publication in 2015.

Prior to 2014, he was published eight times professionally including an article in the first issue of the NPMA Journal of Property and Asset Management in May 2010 — “Industry Leading Practices - A Comparative Analysis.”

Outside the scope of industry publications, he proudly served as a contributing author for the American Society for Testing and Materials International, one of his field’s leading Voluntary Consensus Standard bodies. He and others collaborated to create ASTM Standard Practice for Equipment Management Process Maturity, Standard E2452.

While his ancillary writing career continues to expand, he remains humble in his expectations. He stills finds it incredibly rewarding when someone finds his work worthy of printing. Caring little for personal accolades, his passion is fueled by a want to bestow gathered wisdom, honoring those who taught him the trade.

“Imparting knowledge is a give and take situation,” said Regalado. “There were many who helped me learn throughout my career. Writing articles is my way of giving back to the profession, thus adding to the property profession body of knowledge. My motivation has always been to continually learn and then help others, who hopefully, in turn, can help others.”

Regalado really loves his job, but one day he will awake without any property to manage. Maybe he will embrace his pursuit to share knowledge and become a full-time author. He said he has always wanted to write a book but has yet to decide on a subject. Just a guess — it may involve property management.
