BAGHDAD – The morning air was cool and crisp. The sun had yet to rise from the east.
A light, feathery drift of snow fell on the valley as a new working day began.
However, the morning of Jan. 11 was not just any old working day for local residents experiencing what might be a normal snow shower in the midst of January...this was the start of a new day for Soldiers fighting in a battle against terrorists in the desert environment of Iraq.
"I walked out of my trailer that morning in absolute shock and awe," said Staff Sgt. Thomas Brown, assistant commandant, 4th Infantry Division. "This is my third deployment into this country and I have never seen anything like this.
"I'm used to seeing temperatures reach upwards of 120-130 degrees, so, seeing it drop down to even be cold enough for snow, it's just wow."
In fact, this was the first recorded snow fall in Baghdad in nearly 35 years, said Air Force Capt. Troy Schultz, a staff weather officer for Multi-National Division – Baghdad.
