    Joint Task Force Bravo

SOTO CANO AIR BASE, Honduras—A Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape Specialist recently taught a class to 10 personnel assigned to Joint Task Force-Bravo about the importance of using self-defense to escape a violent situation.

“The point of this class is to get you to think differently about fighting,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Dayne Tosi, SERE Specialist assigned to JTF-Bravo operations cell. “Violence is a socially destructive behavior that should not be advocated, but there may be cases where violence is necessary to protect ourselves.”

The training prepared the students both physically and mentally for what they could experience if placed in a dangerous scenario. The students learned that true self defense is more than just personal protection and learning a set of techniques to escape from an attacker.

“The key is to recognize potential dangers and avoid the situation or threat altogether. If for some reason you cannot avoid the threat then surviving becomes your ultimate goal,” added Tosi.

The course consisted of the basic principles of the psychology of fighting, threat identification, being prepared, maintaining offensive range, ground escape and weapon use.
