CAMP JOSEPH T. ROBINSON, Ark. -- Maj. Gen. William D. Wofford retired after serving over 40 years in the military during a retirement ceremony here today at the National Guard Professional Educational Center.
Wofford, a native of Conway, initially enlisted in 1971 as a 2nd Lt. following graduation from the Reserve Officer Training Corps at Arkansas Tech. University, Russellville. He then went on to Ft. Sill, Okla., for Field Artillery Officer Basic Course. Which then led to him to the beginning of his career with the Arkansas Army National Guard in 1975.
“Ever since I was a little kid I wanted to be a soldier,” said Wofford, the now retired adjutant general of the Arkansas Army and Air National Guard. “I was determined to follow in my father’s footsteps.”
The driving force behind 43 years of military service is the dedication and motivation of the soldiers and airmen, Wofford said. He added it was his greatest honor to be able to lead all of them. Wofford was in charge of almost 10,000 soldiers and airmen until his retirement Jan. 13.
“In all of my dealings with the Guard, I never heard officer, enlisted or anyone say anything negative about Maj. Gen. Wofford,” shared Lewis D. Kaslow, a long time colleague and friend of Wofford. “He just exemplifies leadership.”
Now that he has retired after so many years Wofford said he intends to spend time with his family and start fly-fishing.
