BISMARCK, N.D. — A formal welcome home ceremony will honor about 40 North Dakota National Guard Soldiers who served in Afghanistan. Members of the Bismarck-based 814th Medical Company (Area Support) will be lauded for their service during a Freedom Salute ceremony at 10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Raymond J. Bohn Armory in Bismarck.

The unit mobilized in Dec. 2013 for a yearlong mission to Afghanistan. However, due to reduced mission requirements, half of the Soldiers returned in home in two groups during the summer of 2014, with the remaining Guardsmen touched down in North Dakota in early November.

In Afghanistan, the 814th Medical Company (Area Support) conducted two primary missions. A portion of the Soldiers served as 911 support teams providing emergency patient transport to base treatment facilities as ambulance drivers. The Guard medics also provided first aid and conducted sick call care for service members and civilian contractors at a troop medical clinic.

The commanding officer is Capt. Coty Sicble, of Bismarck, while 1st Sgt. Ken Baer, of Garrison, North Dakota, served as the unit’s senior noncommissioned officer. After Baer redeployed early, 1st Sgt. Kevin Anderson, of Fargo, North Dakota assumed duties as the unit’s top noncommissioned officer.

During Sunday’s ceremony, more than 10 of the Soldiers who served in Afghanistan will receive additional honors for mobilizing twice. Additionally, family members and supporters will be recognized for their contributions to a successful deployment.

Traditionally, Freedom Salute ceremonies occur about three months after Soldiers return from a deployment and coincide with the third Yellow Ribbon reintegration weekend that brings together Soldiers and family members for programs and reintegration activities to foster strong, resilient military families.
