FORT PICKETT, Va. – Command Sgt. Maj. Terry Gibbs will become the next command sergeant major of Fort Pickett Maneuver Training Center beginning March 1, 2015, according to an announcement made Jan. 12, 2015, by Brig. Gen. Walter L. Mercer, assistant adjutant general – Army.
“Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs will make a great addition to the leadership team at Fort Pickett,” said Mercer. “He has decades of experience leading and taking care of Soldiers in field and garrison environments, as well as while deployed. His experience, advice and wise counsel will be invaluable as the [Maneuver Training Center] team continues its great work to maintain readiness for our federal and state missions in the challenging and resource constrained environment we now face.”
Gibbs currently serves as the command sergeant major for the Fort Belvoir-based Headquarters Battalion, 29th Infantry Division. Gibbs, who hails from Chesapeake, Virginia, is a combat veteran of Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn. He is employed full time as a police sergeant in the City of Norfolk Police Department. He will serve as the CSM as a traditional Guard Soldier and continue to work with the Norfolk Police Department.
“We are excited to have Command Sgt. Maj. Gibbs join our leadership team,” said Lt. Col. William P. Scott, commander of Fort Pickett Maneuver Training Center. “His civilian and military experience, leadership skills, devotion to Soldiers and commitment to the Virginia National Guard make him well-suited to assume this critical role as the command sergeant major.”
As command sergeant major, Gibbs played a key role in shaping the Portsmouth-based 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team during their deployment to Iraq in support of Operation New Dawn in 2011. Gibbs was instrumental in the execution of the 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s Exportable Combat Training Capability rotation in 2014.
“Commitment to the Virginia Army National Guard’s mission, goals and vision; as well as taking care of Soldiers are my top priorities,” said Gibbs. “I will work hard at team building and strengthening relationships in the Fort Pickett Community.”
Gibbs holds a Bachelor of Arts in criminal justice degree from Saint Leo University.
The Fort Pickett Maneuver Training Center command sergeant major will serve as the commander’s personal adviser on matters affecting the enlisted force. The exact duties vary depending on the commander, though much of the time Gibbs will be observing training and influencing programs and policies affecting Soldiers, families and tenant organizations at Fort Pickett Maneuver Training Center.
The position was previously held by Command Sgt. Maj. Michael “Doc” McGhee until Dec. 31, 2014. McGhee retired after a 28 year career.
Gibbs enlisted in the U.S. Army Jan. 27, 1988, as a cannon crewmember and served in a variety of units as a field artilleryman. He then transferred to the Virginia National Guard in 1992 and was assigned as a gunner with Battery C, 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team . He held a variety of positions within 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment culminating as first sergeant of the Hampton-based Battery B, 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery Regiment during their deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2003. He was then selected to serve as first sergeant with Norfolk-based Troop A, 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment during their deployment to Iraq. In 2011, Gibbs was selected as the command sergeant major for 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry Regiment.
Gibbs is a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy, the First Sergeants Course, Multiple Launch Rocket System Operators Course, Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course, Battle Focused Instructor Course, the Basic Noncommissioned Officer Course and Primary Leadership Development Course.
His awards include the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters, the Kuwait Liberation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal and is a recipient of the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara.
