ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Coast Guard presented the Achievement Medal to Petty Officer 3rd Class Jacob S. Wieduwilt Friday at 9 a.m. at the Fleet Reserve Club in Annapolis for saving the life of three boaters in 2014.

Wieduwilt, a native of Madison County, Illinois, was part of a boat crew from Coast Guard Station Annapolis that responded to a boating accident on the Severn River near Annapolis, July 4, 2014.

Wieduwilt served as the crew’s coxswain, navigating through the congested waterway in reduced visibility where spectators had gathered aboard approximately 600 boats to watch the Independence Day fireworks display.

Once on scene, Wieduwilt directed crewmembers to board the disabled boat while a another crewmember prepared first aid supplies.

Wieduwilt placed the disabled boat in a side tow with the assistance of crewmembers.

Wieduwilt managed communications between his crew, Station Annapolis, Coast Guard Sector Baltimore and emergency response personnel on shore while assisting his crew in the administration of first aid to a boater with a head injury, a boater with lacerations to her leg and a third boater suffering from shock.

Within 10 minutes, all three boaters were transferred to awaiting emergency crews on shore.

The Coast Guard Achievement Medal is awarded to people who distinguish themselves for professional and/or leadership achievement in a combat or noncombat situation based on sustained performance or specific achievement of a superlative nature.

“Knowing you and your boat’s limitations can severely decrease the possibility of an accident,” said Wieduwilt. “The Severn River is narrow. The added complication of heavy boat traffic and large amounts of wake didn’t help the situation.”
