STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Petty Officer 2nd Class Luisney Rodriguez, a native of Miami, Florida, was recently selected as Coast Guard Station New York’s Sailor of the Quarter for Oct. 1, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2014.
Only four individuals are selected each year for this honor. In addition to receiving a letter of commendation from the station’s commanding officer, Rodriguez was awarded with a unit coin, special liberty passes, and was assigned a special parking spot.
Rodriguez is a 2003 graduate of Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach, Florida, and has been in the U.S. Coast Guard for more than nine years. Rodriguez has been assigned to Coast Guard Station New York since July of 2013.
In addition to Rodriguez’s outstanding efforts as Sailor of the Quarter, he is pursuing advancement requirements for Machinery Technician 1st Class. Rodriguez’s engineering duties on the unit’s nine response boats require extensive attention to detail.
Rodriguez is also a qualified boat engineer and crewmember on the Station’s 45-foot Response Boat-Medium (RBM) and 25-foot Response Boat-Small (RBS). As an engineer and crewmember he participates in search and rescue (SAR) missions, coastal security, law enforcement and unit training in the ports and surrounding waterways of New York and New Jersey.
Rodriguez is also one of the station's premiere boarding officers, conducting dozens of vessel safety and security inspections; ensuring local mariners are in compliance with all federal laws and regulations.
Congratulations to Petty Officer Rodriguez for being selected Sailor of the Quarter by his shipmates, and for his service to the Coast Guard and to the people of the United States.
