CARSON, Calif. - Marines and Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl athletes interacted with local Carson, Calif., youth at a Carson City park, Jan. 2, 2015.
Marines and athletes played games and interacted with local boys and girls throughout the day, part of the Semper Fi Football Program that taught the players about the importance of community engagement.
“All the young people here today, who are Carson residents, are getting exposed to the Marine Corps in a very positive, reinforcing way, teaching them about how wonderful the Marine Corps is,” said Jim Dear, mayor of Carson, Calif. “I just think all of this coming together today is wonderful.”
The Semper Fidelis Football Program provides an opportunity for the Marine Corps to connect on a personal and local level with athletes and influencers, demonstrates a commitment to developing quality citizens, and reinforces how the core values of honor, courage and commitment relate to success on and off the field.
“They’re excited about learning from us, and the Marines are excited about learning from them,” says Sgt. John F. Walker, drill instructor, Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego. “Overall, it’s good as a team, and we’re just letting them know who we are as an organization and how we try to instill things like honor courage and commitment, the leadership traits and the leadership principles in everything we do in our daily lives.”
The event allowed players to give back to the community while also gaining valuable leadership and life lessons.
“I’m actually glad to be here because I honestly haven’t been somewhere like this to give back to a lot of kids, so it’s actually like a privilege to me,” said Marshall Wallace, outside linebacker from John Curtis Christian High School in River Ridge, Louisiana.
Selection for the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl is a badge of honor and gives the opportunity to reward commitment to academic excellence and community leadership.
The bowl game takes place Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. (PST) at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California.
