PARWAN PROVINCE, Afghanistan – A memorial service was held for Sgt. 1st Class Ramon Morris and Spc. Wyatt Martin Tuesday in a chapel at Bagram Air Field. Morris and Martin died Dec. 12, 2014, in Parwan province while conducting a route clearance mission.

The small chapel was packed from wall-to-wall with officers, soldiers and civilians paying their final respects to the fallen heroes. Numerous other countries were represented from the coalition to include Czech Republic, Australia and Lithuania.

A firing party of seven soldiers conducted the 21-gun salute. This was followed by a bugler playing taps to show appropriate honors and mark the end of the ceremony.

Soldiers and leaders alike rendered slow salutes to the memorial constructed for Morris and Martin. Many troopers left their unit patches and coins at the base of the memorial as a symbol of solidarity. Many touched the soldier’s identification tags as they rendered honors. Emotional hand shakes and hugs were shared between soldiers who were close to Morris and Martin.

The 3rd Cavalry Regiment Commander, Col. Cameron Cantlon, said, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Sgt. 1st Class Morris and Spc. Martin. The 3rd Cavalry Regiment expresses our greatest condolences to their families, specifically Wyatt Martin’s parents, Brian and Julie Martin, and Ramon Morris’s brother, Marlon Ladley, his daughter Ariana and to all their extended families and wide circle of friends. Wyatt and Ramon were both valuable members of the Brave Rifles family and American heroes.”
