FORT BLISS, Texas - The Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 193rd Military Police Battalion, Colorado Army National Guard deployed Dec. 2 to Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba, out of the Silas L. Copeland Arrival/Departure Air Control Group airfield to conduct an internment and resettlement mission.
Soldiers and key leaders assigned to HHC 193rd MP Battalion have been preparing for the I/R mission since August of this year due in fact that most of them are not organic to the unit.
“We got Soldiers from five different units that have come together to form the unit for this mission,” said Capt. Mark Sommer, commander, HHC 193rd MP Battalion. “So we got some real talent here from across the state, and I am very confident that they are going to do a really great job.”
Sommer also mentions the unit’s goals for the mission, stating that completing the mission is first and foremost, along with Soldiers returning home in much better shape, educationally and perhaps even financially.
Sommer expresses the overwhelming support from his Family Readiness Group and the Mobilization and Deployment office of the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security.
“We have a really robust FRG, and they have already started sending packages and Christmas stockings and stuffings, those are probably in the mail as we speak, and the home state has been great as well,” said Sommer. “The logistical support and transportation has been great here at Fort Bliss. We really had no issues going through this, it has been wonderful.”
