NORFOLK, Va. - Sailors aboard the guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) successfully completed the 72-hour Inspection and Survey (INSURV) assessment Nov. 21, with an overall score of 81 percent.
“Team Normandy really came together,” said Capt. Scott Robertson, the ship’s commanding officer. “Every crew member, spanning every rate on board, participated to get to this point. Especially in light of the schedule we’ve had over the last six months, I was so proud to hear the scores as they were called out by the senior INSUV inspector.”
INSURV was established by Congress 130 years ago to inspect Navy ships and report on their readiness. It is a thorough inspection that examines ships against Navy standards to determine readiness in a myriad of areas. Seventy-seven inspectors embarked Normandy to inspect systems in each department, throughout the ship.
Engineering department demonstrated the multifaceted capabilities of the LM2500 gas turbine modules and Allison 521 K-17 generators to include a full power run and an electrical plant control console dynamic testing, also known as “EPCC dance.” Every damage control system was tested, from Aqueous Film Forming Foam to the accountability of every emergency escape breathing apparatus. More than 1,000 items were inventoried for every repair locker.
“INSURV is like bringing us back to zero,” said Damage Controlman 1st Class Stephen Swanson, “Now all we have to do is maintain everything as if it were brand new.”
Combat Systems department validated all sensors and weapons and successfully completed detect to engage exercises with the coordination of a leer jet from ashore. Weapons department also demonstrated crew-served weapons readiness, material condition of magazines, and ready service lockers.
Supply department verified their inventory of hazardous materials onboard and successfully demonstrated the effectiveness of sanitation standards for berthing compartments, galleys and mess decks. INSURV inspectors praised Normandy for possessing the best crew berthing on the waterfront.
Now that INSURV is complete, the crew is looking forward to holiday leave and their final hurdle before deployment, the Composite Training Unit Exercise. Following this, the crew is set to deploy in March on a world tour with the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) Carrier Strike Group.
