FORT CARSON, Colo. - Joint Task Force Carson culinary specialists competed in the 4th Infantry Division Thanksgiving meal competition Nov. 19-26 in order to celebrate the history of Thanksgiving, educate Soldiers about their rich unit heritage and to strengthen esprit de corps.

Each of the six participating dining facilities (DFAC) was judged on best overall decorations and best centerpiece.

The winner of the best overall decorations category was the Warfighter DFAC, and the Wolf DFAC took top centerpiece honors.

Spc. Francisco Jaramillo, who prepared some of the decorations for the meal at the NCO Academy DFAC, said he was happy so many people enjoyed the effort.

“It took us more than 30 hours to get everything ready for the service,” said Jaramillo, culinary specialist, Headquarters Support Company, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 4th Infantry Division. “What
drives me is my passion of serving my comrades. Cooking for a huge event (such as) Thanksgiving can be very stressful, and it takes a lot of hours. It makes all of that time worth it when the Soldiers come in and say everything looks awesome and tastes amazing.”

Sgt. Maj. Reginald Uzzell, chief of food operations management, 4th Inf. Div., said he was happy so many of the Soldiers stepped up for this competition because it made the meal that much more special for Soldiers and their Families.

“The cooks put a lot of time and skill into providing the best Thanksgiving (meal for) the Soldiers,” Uzzell said. “This is the biggest event of the year for them. They get to showcase their talent and provide a great meal for their fellow Soldiers. There are a lot of Soldiers that cannot make it home for the holidays. We make this their home as much as we can.”

Spc. Jessica Romero, culinary specialist, 984th Military Police Company, 759th MP Battalion, who works at the Wolf DFAC, echoed Uzzell’s sentiment of providing the best experience possible to those who didn’t make it home.

“It means a lot to help provide a wonderful experience (for) the Soldiers who can’t make it home,” Romero said. “In the Army we are a Family, and we have to take care of each other.”
