YOKOSUKA, Japan – Sailors stationed aboard the U.S. 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) trained on the importance of holiday safety awareness during a safety stand down Wednesday, Nov. 19.

Holiday safety stand downs are generally annual presentations held before the holiday season, aiming to minimize the risk of potential accidents or injuries to Sailors during the holidays.

“Our goal is to prevent mishaps and accidents from occurring during the holiday season,” said USS Blue Ridge safety officer, Lt. j.g. Ron Ceballos. “We want to provide guidance and knowledge to our Sailors so they return to the ship fully fit for duty.”

Along with discussing traditional holiday safety concerns such as Christmas tree care and electrical safety, the stand down also covered topics including occupational safety and security, motorcycle safety, suicide awareness and responsible drinking.

The training is a good refresher for on and off the job, said Ceballos. “Over time we tend to become complacent about some of these issues, so it’s imperative to reinforce safety awareness through periodic training sessions.”

According to Commander Naval Region Japan Fire and Emergency Services, an average of 240 Christmas tree fires occur annually, with one out of every 18 of these fires resulting in a fatality.

“People tend to overlook the potential hazards Christmas trees can pose, and this can result in a catastrophe if the tree isn't properly maintained,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Caitlin Clarke. “I think the information put out during the stand down will help minimize all types of accidents and injuries.”

USS Blue Ridge is currently conducting an on-going selective restricted availability (SRA), a scheduled period for Sailors and contract workers from the ship’s repair facility to conduct ship maintenance and repairs.

Blue Ridge's crew were issued hard hats and safety glasses, personal protective equipment required to be worn at all times during the SRA period, due to the potential safety hazards.

“It's important for everyone to abide by good safety principles at all times,” said Commander, USS Blue Ridge, Capt. Richard McCormack.

“Everyone should enjoy a good time during the holiday season without it being marred by tragedy on the job or at home.”
