FORT BRAGG, N.C. — More than 100 paratroopers assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division were welcomed home to Fort Bragg during a redeployment ceremony, Nov. 24.
The paratroopers, who are assigned to 2nd Battalion, 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st BCT, are the final members of the more than 1,600 paratroopers from the brigade who have redeployed after serving for nine months as the Theater Reserve Force for the International Security Assistance Force – Joint Command in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
The paratroopers began redeploying in early September.
“We’re incredibly excited to have them all back — to have everybody out of harms way is first and foremost,” said Col. Trevor J. Bredenkamp, commander of 1st BCT. “To see the reunion with friends and family is always an incredible sight to see.”
After a brief ceremony, 1st Lt. Bernard Wheeler, assigned to 2nd Bn. 504th PIR, rushed to hug his wife, Britnee and meet his two-and-a-half-week-old daughter, Brelyn, for the first time.
“It’s awesome, it’s amazing, this is my little bundle of joy,” said Wheeler. “I’m just overwhelmed right now.”
Spc. Cieko M. Jones, a paratrooper assigned to Bravo Company, 2nd Bn., 504th PIR, said he was happy to be back on American soil after his second deployment to Afghanistan.
“I’m definitely glad to be back home,” Jones said.
