VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Aegis Ashore Enterprises held a time capsule ceremony at Tactical Training Group, Atlantic (TACTRAGRULANT) aboard NAS Oceana, Dam Neck Annex, Nov. 14.

“It is great to be part of an event that exudes Navy tradition,” said VADM Nora W. Tyson, deputy commander of U.S. Fleet Forces Command, and guest speaker of the event. “These events help us link members of crews past, present and future by creating a line of communication in the form of mementoes.”

In tradition, this is a process of raising a ship’s mast and setting it into a notch or in this case, a step in the keel at the end of the building process. This particular time capsule will be used in a ceremony at the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense Site in Deveselu, Romania.

The new site will provide Sailors and teams the opportunity to experience working with the system, and to certify for operations prior to deployment.

“I am thrilled and so eager to watch the men and women excel at this new facility”, said Tyson. “Sites like the one in Deveselu, are the key reason why we are able to stay at the tip of the spear and continue to operate at the highest and most prepared level possible.”

These ceremonies give members and contributors of the command or project the opportunity to place memorabilia or other items into the time-capsule for good luck.

“I am wholly honored to be a part of this event as it makes me feel like I am a fellow team member”, added Tyson. “I just hope that my contribution can offer a little good fortune for the future of the site and those hard-working men and women therein.”

Romania, U.S., Poland, Turkey and NATO officials added command and organizational coins, photos, ball-caps and currency into the capsule.

The site is currently under construction and is slated to be complete in 2015.
